HyPERiON seminar with Bernhard Blümich “The Phase of the Transverse Magnetization”
July 16th, 2026 IMT Seminar Room
Prof. Bernhard Blümich from RWTH Aachen will speak on “The phase of the NMR signal”. Prof. Bernhard Blümich explores NMR methodology and hardware, in particular low- field NMR, to understand the macroscopic properties of polymer and porous materials including tangible cultural heritage on a microscopic and molecular basis. He was Chair of Macromolecular Chemistry at RWTH Aachen University and is cofounder and director of Magritek Ltd. He developed and applied NMR methods for NMR spectroscopy of liquids and solids, NMR imaging of heterogeneous materials and fluid transport, and NMR relaxation and diffusion techniques.

Congratulations to Dr. Selina Eckel!
We are delighted to celebrate the PhD graduation of Selina Eckel, PhD, who successfully defended her dissertation “A Broadband EPR Spectrometer Using Transmission Line Microwave Probes”.
As a doctoral researcher in CRC 1527 HyPERiON Project A03 "Solid-state ultra-wideband transceivers for enhanced magnetic resonance spectroscopy", Selina made significant contributions to the development of broadband spectroscopy hardware for next-generation magnetic resonance applications.
Congratulations, Selina, on this outstanding achievement! We thank you for your contributions to HyPERiON and wish you continued success in your future career.

DFG Approves Second Funding Period for HyPERiON
We are delighted to announce that the German Research Foundation has approved a 2nd funding period for HyPERiON. Following a successful 1st funding period, the CRC will receive funding for another four years, enabling us to continue our pioneering research on compact, high-performance magnetic resonance technologies.
The continuation of funding recognizes the excellent scientific achievements of the consortium and the strong collaboration between the participating institutions. In the coming years, HyPERiON researchers will further advance the miniaturization and integration of magnetic resonance systems, with the goal of making this powerful technology more accessible for applications in medical diagnostics, materials analysis, chemistry, biology, and beyond.
We sincerely thank all researchers, staff members, students, partners, and supporters who have contributed to the success of the 1st funding period. We look forward to the exciting scientific developments and innovations that lie ahead in the next phase of HyPERiON.

A Rainbow in a Microchip – Girls’ Day 2026 at IMT
As part of KIT's Girls’ Day 2026, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of enthusiastic participants to IMT for a hands-on introduction to the world of microfluidics.
Under the theme “A Rainbow in a Microchip – Let’s Make the World a Little More Colorful Together”, the students explored how fluids behave in microscopic channels. In an interactive session, they designed and build their own fluidic channels using everyday materials, then tested them directly, experiencing the principles of microfluidics in a playful and creative way.
A visit to our labs also provided a glimpse into real research applications, showcasing just how innovative and colorful this field can be.
A big thank you to all participants and organizers for their enthusiasm!
We are pleased to announce that Shebha Anandhi Jegadeesan, a postdoctoral researcher in HyPERiON from the University of Konstanz, received the Best Poster Award at the International Conference on Electron Spin Resonance (ICESR 2026) held at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, India. Shebha won the award for the poster on 'Simulation of pulsed DNP in the steady state'.
The award recognizes the outstanding quality and relevance of the presented research and highlights the international visibility of our work. We warmly congratulate Shebha on this achievement.

On 29.6.-02.07.2025 HyPERiON organised an international conference at the Buhlsche Mühle in Ettlingen with the title "Microscale NMR and MRI". We were honored to host outstanding speakers from the field of NMR research and approx. 100 participants.

On Girls'Day 2025, ten students had the unique opportunity to explore the fascinating world of microchips and MRI technologies in a special workshop. From an general introduction to MRI to practical applications – this workshop offered exciting insights and interactive demonstrations.
September 2024On September 12th HyPERiON organised a Diversity Day at the NTI Hörsaal at KIT. The workshop was organised by HyPERiON's diversiy coordinator Prof. Dr.-Ing. Cagri Ulusoy. The programme was split into two sessions. In the morning Shawna Samuel hosted a workshop on "How to advance your ideas, especially as an underrepresented person in science". Shawna is a long-time coach focussing diversity issues on and the creator of the Mental Offload. In the afternoon featured a panel discussion with the topic "Diversity as strength in academia". |

September 2024Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) - among them the speaker of HyPERiON Jan Korvink - and Voxalytic GmbH have developed a new method with which, for the first time, the chiral structure of a molecule - the exact spatial arrangement of the atoms - can be elucidated directly using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. This important step in the development of new drugs has previously been a time-consuming process. Now the new method could become a standard tool for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The results were published in the journal Advanced Materials. (DOI: 10.1002/adma.202408547). Learn more |

September 2023With great sadness we have received news that our esteemed colleague Dr. rer. nat. habil. Michael Maiwald passed away on 16.08.2023. Michael Maiwald most recently worked as head of the process analytics department at the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing. He was one of the reviewers for our CRC and a big supporter of NMR applications. The scientific community has lost an excellent researcher and he will be missed deeply. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. |
